In my attempt to help figure out the roofing for the Hexadome (Hexadome, MB), I sought out this house. Absolutely gorgeous ... I originally thought the house used recycled shingles, but upon closer inspection, this is cedar roofing. I have seen it with asphalt shingles, but apparently it is impossible to procure used ones these days, as contractors tend to rip them right off and (hopefully) recycle them in other ways. Cedar might be too expensive and/or time consuming but my neighbour did recommend a metal roof too, for it's durability and longevity.
* later note: upon returning to help roof the hexadome, I found myself painstakingly cutting large pointy sheets of metal roofing with a pair of tin snips. Climbing up ladders and drilling gasket sheathed screws. Shaping overhangs with wood.
Cedar is extremely durable and decay-resistant. They are also scented. The scent of cedar may be used being a repellent to moths.
